The pump will automatically dispense Marcaine (a long acting local anesthetic) into the shoulder. Some pumps come with a "bolus button" that you can push to give an extra boost. In general, the pumps alleviate about have of the pain, you will still need pain pills. Begin taking the pain pills when your arm/hand begins to tingle as the block wears off. Don't wait to see how much pain you will have, go ahead and start the pain pills to keep the pain from getting a head start.

When the pump runs dry, remove the bandage covering the shoulder. There will be a clear adhesive bandage covering the pump catheter tube. Remove that clear bandage but leave the tapes over your incisions alone. Pull the pump catheter out all at once. It will be about 4 inches long and should pull out easily. Then place a Band-Aid over the catheter site. Place dry gauze over the steri-strips on the incisions. Do not put any ointment on the incisions or handle them in any way. That's it, you are all done!

For any questions or problems with the pump, contact TMC Orthopedics.
